History of Park Memorial Methodist Church
Park Street Methodist Church, originally named Community Methodist Church, was opened on January 20, 1952 in the Reynolds Holston Canning plant on Smith St. Rev. William Griggs, a Troy State student, was appointed as the first pastor and served the church for six months. In 1953 a lot facing Park Street was purchased and a chapel was built. The name was changed from Community Methodist to Park Street Methodist on September 29, 1957. The brick church on Park Street was built in 1959. In 1991 the property on Park Street was sold and the name was changed to Park Memorial United Methodist Church. The church temporarily moved into the old warehouse building beside the railroad tracks on South Three Notch St. The first service was held there on July 28, 1991 and the last service was September 20, 1992. The first service and consecration ceremony was held in the new church on Elba highway September 27, 1992. A preschool was started in 1998. Plans for the Claudia
Crosby Family Life Center were presented on August 21, 2001.
